About
Imagine Durban is an eThekwini Municipality-led project on integrated, long-term planning. It has been implemented in conjunction with Sustainable Cities, an NGO from Vancouver, Canada with a mandate to assist cities in long-term planning for sustainability, and the PLUS Network, a network of 35 cities in 14 countries established to share experiences in sustainability planning.
Problem
The aim of the project was to share information about sustainability in both local (eThekwini Municipality) and international contexts. The project, led by the Corporate Policy Unit, required an online space in which organisations and residents of the city could connect, interact and share their views on sustainable development in Durban.
Solution
We developed and managed a web portal with a blog functionality for regular updates on sustainable development in Durban. We sourced and managed bilingual (English and Zulu) content for the blog for the duration of a three-year contract. Linked to web portal, we developed the Durban Community Network, a volunteer networking site where people could register, create profiles and interact with each other as well as volunteer for sustainable development organisations. Social media networks like Facebook and Twitter were used to promote the project and extend the degree of participation. We also developed a regularly updated, online repository of information on how to implement sustainable change in people’s everyday lives.
Result
An active and integrated online portal that facilitated the sharing of information on sustainable development in Durban and beyond, which included the perspectives of government, NGOs and everyday people.
