About
Transformation is an established journal serving as a forum for analysis and debate about South African society in transition, as well as the surrounding region, and the global context that affects southern African developments.
Problem
With an archive of back issues dating back to 1986 – featuring articles by some of South Africa’s most renowned public intellectuals, politicians and academics – the editorial team felt that they had a valuable resource to share. They had also started to experience problems with the manner in which the journal was managed and felt the need to make this process more efficient.
Solution
We set up an online archive and journal management system using the open-source OJS framework. The back issues, divided into year and issue, were made available as digitised PDF documents. The OJS framework allowed for new issues to be managed by the editorial team and submissions to be received and tracked through the website.
Result
The online archive has been used extensively by scholars and researchers. All new submissions are now taken through the website and the editing process has been streamlined.
