The Ulwazi Programme

The Ulwazi Programme, run through the eThekwini Municipal Library, is a pilot project to collect and store indigenous knowledge in Durban. Digital information and communication technologies have revolutionised the ways in which knowledge and technical know-how travel around the world. The extent to which information requirements are met by the Internet throughout the world is reflected in the high usage statistics from developed countries. The global trend of using the Internet for preservation and dissemination of information causes a dilemma for the African information community.  African local content on the Web is very low, putting Africa  at a major disadvantage in the current knowledge economy. CAVA

CAVA (Human Communication: an Audio-Visual Archive) is an online digital repository for audio-visual data on real-life human communication for spoken and signed languages. It is a collaboration between several University College London (UCL) Departments and Research Centres, the UKDA (UK Data Archive) and is co-funded by UCL and the JISC (Joint Information Systems Committee, UK).  Read more …

The Centre for Critical Research on Race and Identity

The Centre for Critical Research on Race and Identity (ccrri) is dedicated to facilitating the study of race thinking and changing identities so as to improve understanding of, and stimulate public dialogue about, the epistemological, moral, cultural and other bases for perceptions of human diversity and difference. The Centre aims to use South Africa as a complex, multi-layered backdrop to study, and suggest practical solutions to local and global issues of race and identity. Its ultimate goal is to contribute towards social justice and tolerance of human difference, and to confirm and explore that which humans share, in this country and elsewhere.  Read more …
